Banking and Financial Stability

Capital, liquidity, funding, profitability and systemic risk across banking systems.

This research area evaluates how banks absorb shocks, fund balance sheets and transmit financial conditions to the wider economy. It brings capital, liquidity, asset quality, profitability and cross-border exposures into one evidence framework while preserving differences in regulatory definitions and reporting dates.

The aim is not to manufacture a single global number where none is supportable. Publications identify the systems covered, the missing observations and the joint conditions that could turn a manageable vulnerability into a financial-stability event.

Global Banking Sector Report 2026

An evidence-led audit of 2025 results and information available through 28 July 2026 across major banking systems. Covered systems remained profitable and well capitalised, cross-border bank credit grew 11%, and balance-sheet growth continued in most matched samples. No harmonised same-date global balance sheet is supportable; the principal downside path combines commercial-real-estate refinancing, funding and operational shocks.
